Arnie Berle – Beginning Fingerstyle Blues Guitar
Arnie Berle Beginning Fingerstyle Blues Guitar PDF + Mp3 CD download. Takes you from the fundamentals of fingerpicking to five authentic blues tunes. With graded exercises, illustrated tips, plus standard notation and tablature. This is a great book because it breaks down the process of learning acoustic (fingerstyle) blues step-by-step, and shows you how to play the blues in the old Mississippi-blues and other related styles. It starts off with beginner techniques such as learning how to play an alternating bass, combining the thumb with the fingers, playing chords with this thumb/finger picking pattern, maintaining a steady rhythm, playing different beats, and moves into more complicated playing involving melody and blues notes, fretting hand techniques, picking hand techniques, different chord shapes, vamps, and singing the blues.
The end of the book then contains 5 blues pieces: M&O Blues, Beekman Blues, Big Road Blues, 32-20 Blues, and Black Rat Blues. The CD is a great accompaniment, because it allows you to hear the examples in the book, and really “listen” for that blues feel.
This is the perfect book for someone wanting to learn fingerstyle guitar. You practice several exercises that lead to 5 full blues compositions and you’ll even be helped along with learning to sing to these tracks – a daunting task if you’re just starting to fingerpick. There’s enough here to keep the beginner busy and provide a good base of a few different techniques.
If you have the patience to work through it and perfect the exercises, this book WILL get you playing passable fingerstyle country blues! Of course, this takes discipline and commitment on the part of the learner – none of the first 80% or so of the exercises is anything you would even think about playing in public (they sound, as you might expect, quite “instructional” in nature), but the authors have included a handful of arrangements of real blues at the end of the book. If you’ve done your due diligence and worked through the exercises to the point of proficiency, you will surprise yourself and see that you CAN play this style of music!
The first few exercises are easy enough that an absolute beginner can learn them fairly quickly and practice them. The exercises get more difficult as the book progresses, but you can learn at your own pace. If you are a beginner, this book will keep you busy and interested. Overall, a good investment in your guitar training.
This is a methodical, easy to understand and progressive book. What this means is that you start easy and build your way up, but you get so much as you go. If you are not able to read music, there is tab and good – easy to understand explanations of note values and time signatures and how to apply them to your playing. Each lesson and exercise builds on the one before and inspires confidence. This is well worth you money and time.
